Van Zijl Blue Ink 2018
Van Zijl Blue Ink 2018
Manufacturer: Imbuko
An unusual combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz make up this great wine. Dark ruby colour with perfect viscosity. The aroma shows hints of forest fruits, black cherries, dark chocolate, but also, thanks to the Shiraz, traces of spice, tobacco and smoky notes. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and powerful, yet delicate. Good acidity supported by ripe tannins make for a well-balanced wine that has a wonderful, long finish.

About the winery
Imbuko Winery is located on Uitkyk Farm near the town of Wellington in the heart of the appellation of the same name. Founder and owner Theunis van Zijl has been in the wine industry for 30 years. Imbuko means "admiration for" in the Xhosa language, which is one of the eleven official languages of South Africa and was the native tongue of South Africa's most famous citizen, Nelson Mandela.
The winery has evolved from a small producer of ciders and wines mostly for resale to in-house producers, which now produces world-class wines. The grapes from their vineyards come not only from the farm in Wellington, but also from the Western Cape's most important wine regions of Stellenbosch, Paarl, Worchester and Robertson.
Terroir
Wellington is a major wine region in South Africa's Western Cape, approximately 60km from Cape Town and 55km from the Atlantic coast, where the cold Antarctic Benguela Current brings refreshing winds in late summer and helps to moderate high temperatures.
The local mountains are a major influence on the types of wine produced in Wellington. While daytime temperatures can be quite high, cooler air from the mountains drifts into the valley at night, leading to significant temperature differences between day and night. Weathering and erosion of the surrounding mountains have enriched Wellington with a variety of soil types. Vines on the lower terraces thrive in well-drained shale, while higher up the slopes there is sandstone and decayed granite. These dry, less fertile soils are particularly suited to vine cultivation.
