Ridgeback Sauvignon Blanc Lionhound 2022

Ridgeback Sauvignon Blanc Lionhound 2022

Manufacturer: Ridgeback Wines

Expressive and very fruity. That's how one could describe this classic Sauvignon Blanc, which tends more towards the "New World" style into exotic fruit and rounder flavours. The colour of the wine is greenish yellow with good viscosity. The aromas are mainly notes of mango, ripe peach, lemongrass and lychee. On the palate, the wine is soft but with good acidity, very fruity with a light fresh finish.

About the winery

The first wine in this young winery was made in 2000 and in 2021 their Shiraz received the highest Platters rating. Winemaker Toit Wessels, goes from success to success and yet refuses to settle for anything less than the best that comes out of the cellar. Then in 2003, the modern Ridgeback winery was built with a capacity of 300 tons. Today, total production is 16 000 carrots.

Rhodesian Ridgeback originates from South Africa, where legends and stories are told of its exploits and courage in the African bush while fighting lions. Their tenacity and ruggedness are symbolic of Africa's pioneering spirit. The pedigree, character and stature of this formidable animal is reflected in local wines that focus on massive and full-bodied profiles.

Terroir

Paarl is known as one of South Africa's best wine regions. It is located north of Stellenbosch and boasts some of the most prestigious wineries in the Western Cape. The diverse terroir in Paarl allows wine makers to try a wide range of varieties and blends. The red wines are characterised by their richness and robustness and distinctive fruit intensity, while the white wines are characterised by their fruity and tropical profile. The main grape varieties grown in the region include Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinotage, Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay.

The vineyards in Paarl are located on the lower slopes of the Paarl Rock, on the north side of the Simonsberg mountain and in the Berg river valley. These mountains contribute well-drained granite and shale soil ideal for growing vines, while the soil on the valley floor is mainly based on sandstone. Compared to the coastal areas of the Western Cape, the climate in Paarl is relatively warm, with long hot summers and cool, wet winters.
