Forget the Prosecco. For the same price, you can get this wine, but aged using the traditional 'Champagne' method (or 'Cap Classique' in South Africa). That is, the wine has been fermented a second time directly in the bottle you hold in your hand, giving it a much more expressive but elegant bubbling. It was a complete revelation to us that a winery could deliver such a fantastic sparkling wine at this price. Aromas of pears, grapefruit zest and lime segue into a dynamic but delicate palate with a persistent pearl that lingers on the palate for a very long time after drinking.

About the winery
The L'Ormarins winery emphasizes modern technology while preserving old traditional "European" practices. While Méthode Cap Classique has become an established category in South Africa, they aim to spread the quality of this appellation not only in South Africa but also around the world. In 1694, he built the estate known as L'Ormarins Jean Roi. Spread over 50 hectares, Jean Roi named it after his hometown of Lourmarin in Provence, France. On a plot of land dedicated exclusively to wine and grain production, Jean Roi immediately planted, in addition to 4 000 vines, fruit orchards.
Dr Anton Rupert acquired L'Ormarins in 1968 and in 1984 restored the manor house and the historic cellar (built in 1799), which were declared national monuments. In 1989, L'Ormarins wins all the major local wine competitions under the leadership of Dr. Anton's son, Anthony Rupert, in whose legacy the Anthony Rupert winery is then built after Anthony's sudden death in 2001.
Terroir
The Franschhoek Valley, located in the south-eastern corner of Paarl in South Africa's Western Cape, is a vast area interspersed with vineyards and known for its prestigious wine estates. This charming valley has been a centre of wine production since the 17th century and is particularly famous for its Cap Classique sparkling wines, which are made mainly from a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir varieties.
The valley's winemaking roots date back to the late 16th century, when French Huguenots fleeing their homeland brought their winemaking know-how to South Africa. The name Franschhoek, which means 'French corner' in Dutch, reflects the enduring French influence, which is reflected in the names of the vineyards and the town's architectural style. The surrounding mountains play a key role in mitigating the climate by trapping the cool southerly winds, thus extending the growing season and contributing to the development of complex grape aromas.
Franschhoek enjoys a warm continental climate which is ideal for producing sparkling and rich white wines with a fruity edge. The soil composition is predominantly alluvial sandstone, with granite deposits on the northern mountain slopes.
